The Patent Corporation Treaty (PCT) system offers the most cost-effective mechanism for securing patents in PCT member countries. Currenly, there are in excess of 140 PCT member countries.  Under the PCT an International Application is filed in a PCT member country or directly at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). The International Application undergoes International processing and a International Search Report (ISR) is given to the Applicant. Futher, an Applicant may request and Internation Preliminary Examination Report (IPER). The ISR and the IPER may be helpful in judging the patentability of the claimed invention prior to commenced of the National Stage. At the latest, 30 months after the priority date of the International Application the National Stage commences with the filing of one or more National Phase applications. The US is one of the major countries for PCT National Phase Filings.
